The Panthers Ten Point Platform
The article I chose is a brief description of the Black Panthers political aims and beliefs. They issued this statement in October 1966. In October of 1966, in Oakland California, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense.( see above picture) The Panthers practiced self-defense of minority communities against the U.S. government. Throughout the article the Panthers refer and back up their points with excerpts of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence.
Mainly, the Panthers want a better society. They want housing for people, employment, and equal rights for all. The Black Panthers were extremely against racism. One of their points was that no black man should be forced to go to war for a country that does not treat them right. They seek a future in which police aren’t brutal and black people aren’t murdered just because of the color of their skin. All ten points determine how blacks should be treated and why. The Panthers Ten Point Platform represent who the Black Panthers are, what they stand for, and what is truly just.
The Black Panthers Ten Point Platform is an important part of History because it shows many valuable explanations as to how blacks should be treated. It fought for equal rights of blacks which has a major impact on history today. If no one fought for black people back then, they may still be treated unequally today. The panthers overall were a big part of the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement still has an effect on history today.
