The Fifteenth Amendment
The Fifteenth Amendment prohibits denying a citizen suffrage based on their race. After being ratified on February 3, 1870, every man in the United States had the right to vote. The Fifteenth Amendment is as followed, "Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
In order for an amendment to be passed, there needs to be a 2/3 approval in both the House of Representatives and the Senate and 3/4 (28) states. This was eventually achieved even though many Democrats were afraid that if African Americans were allowed to vote, it would take away from their political power. Also, they were angry at Republicans for breaking their promise of allowing the states to decide for themselves if they wanted to allow African Americans the right to vote. Republicans supported the 15th amendment and were happy when it was passed. There were many protesters including the KKK that were against the passing of the Fifteenth Amendment.
The Fifteenth Amendment is a very important part of American history. Without this amendment, African Americans and other races would not have the right to vote. This amendment may have changed the outcome of some elections. Without African Americans' votes, different people may have won presidential elections. Who knows where we would be if this amendment was not passed.
