CORE
In 1942, CORE was founded by a group of students at the University of Chicago. Many of these founders were believers of non-violent protests. CORE's mission is to ensure equality for everyone no matter what their race, gender, or religion. CORE's motto is simply "Equality A Reality For All."
Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson made history when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. At only 28, Jackie Robinson caused a major breakthrough of the color line in sports. While some white people believed that this move was long overdue, others were very much against it. Having integrated teams started primarily with Jackie Robinson.
The SCLC
The SCLC is the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and was created in January of 1957. This was when sixty black ministers and civil rights leaders met in Atlanta, Georgia in an effort to replicate the successful strategy and tactics of the recently concluded Montgomery (Alabama) bus boycott.
The Little Rock Nine
On September 25, 1957, nine brave students went to their first day of school at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. They were met with angry mobs simply because they were African Americans attending a white school. Guards had to be sent in to protect the courageous students. The nine students: Gloria Ray, Terrence Roberts, Jefferson Thomas, Carlotta Walls, Minnijean Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Ernest Green, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Patillo are now known as the Little Rock Nine.
Ruby Bridges
On Monday, November 14, 1960, Ruby Bridges attended her first day of school at William Frantz Public School. At the age of 6, she was the first African American to be integrated into this school. That day she made history, representing the beginning of the end of segregation in the Deep South. Marshals were needed to protect Ruby from the crowd of angry parents surrounding the entrance to the school. Through adversity she broke barriers under the guidance of her teacher Mrs. Henry, a white woman from Boston.
The Black Panthers
In October of 1966, in Oakland California, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. The Panthers practiced self-defense of minority communities against the U.S. government.
The SNCC
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee founded by Ella Baker, a Civil RIghts Organizer., was a youth-led organization of the Civil Rights Movement which sought to fight segregation and other forms of rascism. They played a role in sit-ins, Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, and many other major events.
